Our innovative solutions

TECHNOLOGIES & INDUSTRIAL PROCESSES

Seaweed Concept’s innovation is based on the development of state-of-the-art technology combining mobile and modular seaweed biorefinery units and patented lacto-fermentation technology.

BIOREFINERY

Plug-and-play biorefinery units facilitate on-site seaweed processing and stabilization. Ready-to-operate, self-contained and energy-efficient, the units are housed in portable containers, reducing logistics costs and environmental impact while facilitating on-site seaweed processing and stabilization.

LACTO-FERMENTATION

Lacto-fermentation processes not only preserve seaweed in its natural state for long periods, but also enhance its nutritional and functional value. Fermentation is an age-old preservation process that transforms the raw material through the activity of micro-organisms, which produce metabolites of interest in the raw material

INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

Thanks to a precision lacto-fermentation process, Seaweed Concept can produce high-quality seaweed-based ingredients all year round.

Seaweed Concept thus represents a real technological breakthrough in the industrialization of seaweed, bridging the gap between the availability of marine resources and industrial applications, by producing high value-added ingredients such as fermented seaweed extracts, fermentation juices and seaweed juices (fermented or not).

By making seaweed accessible, we are providing industries with a sustainable and renewable resource that contributes to meeting global challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity and food security.

Our exclusive features:

    • On-site mobile biorefinery
    • Low energy consumption
    • Environmentally-friendly process
    • Standardization and stability
    • Preservation of nutritional and functional qualities
    • Enhanced intrinsic product quality

SEAWEED: A SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVE TO MEET GLOBAL CHALLENGES

Seaweed Concept’s ambition is to be the first European company to provide a structured, long-term access to a high-quality resource, by making seaweed available all year round and increasing the fields of application at an attractive cost price.

A RESOURCE FOR THE FUTURE

Seaweed is an increasingly recognized natural resource used in a wide range of industrial applications.

Responding to the major challenges of tomorrow, seaweed cultivation is also used to protect natural environments, integrated into aquaculture or wind farms, and fits perfectly into the new low-carbon economy. This is why, in addition to the use of harvested seaweed, huge production fields are springing up on the coasts of every continent. Seaweed is a resource that requires no fresh water or fertilizers to grow.

As well as being a new available resource, seaweed are becoming an essential asset for tomorrow’s world.

There is a huge variety of seaweed with exceptional properties and compositions, and they are recognized as a real carbon sink. Scientists claim that the oceans are the planet’s first lungs.

INDUSTRIAL CHALLENGES

Seaweed offer high-impact solutions for the future, but industrial challenges limit their adoption, leaving their potential largely untapped.

Seaweed, despite their many benefits and potential applications, present a complex set of collection and processing challenges that hinder their widespread use in a variety of industries. From an industrial perspective, these challenges have a significant impact on operational efficiency, product quality and overall sustainability efforts.

Seaweed Concept has identified the following issues:

Seaweed biomass is highly seasonal. Approximately 80% of the total biomass is only available for 20% of the year, which means that processing facilities are used very little.

The rapid degradation of seaweed poses significant obstacles. Due to their high water content, which generally accounts for 80-90% of their biomass, seaweed cannot be stored in an untreated state for long periods.

The fluctuating quality of seaweed over the seasons poses challenges for the standardization of product formulations.

Access to the resource is difficult and requires specialized marine equipment. Biomass remains untapped in remote locations.
